Clemson named Christopher Vizzina its starter for the season opener against No. 13 LSU on Sept. 5, giving the Clemson quarterback job to the player who edged Tait Reynolds in preseason practice. The decision ends one part of the competition and begins another, because Dabo Swinney said on Sept. 1 that nothing is finished yet.
For Vizzina, the moment arrives after years of waiting behind Cade Klubnik. He backed up Klubnik in 2024 and 2025, redshirted in 2023 and has played in 14 games since arriving at Clemson, but his only start before this week came against SMU when Klubnik was sidelined with a sprained ankle. In that game, Clemson lost 35-24, though Vizzina completed 69% of his passes for 317 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Swinney described Vizzina as steady and said he has put his head down and gone to work. That patience has been part of Vizzina's path for a long time. He was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, starred at Briarwood Christian High School from 2019-22 and passed for 7,038 yards and 51 touchdowns before committing to Clemson in April 2022, choosing it over Auburn, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Ole Miss.
Vizzina has said he learned to handle the wait by taking mental reps while watching Klubnik and imagining himself in those situations. He said there were Saturdays when he wished he was playing, but he tried to place himself in the moment so he would be ready when the chance came. That is what makes the latest decision feel both like a reward and a test: Clemson has a starter for LSU, but Swinney's refusal to close the competition leaves open the possibility that the depth chart can still shift after Sept. 5.
The question now is not whether Vizzina can take the first snap. It is whether he can do enough against No. 13 LSU to make this job his beyond one game.
