The Braves are sending Martin Perez to the mound Saturday night against Zack Wheeler, turning Braves Vs Phillies into a straight pitching test at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. ET on September 5th in Philadelphia, Pa.
That matchup is why this game is drawing attention now. Wheeler has been mostly himself again after returning from injury this season, and his strike-throwing has stayed strong even with a slightly elevated walk rate. Over the last month or so, though, the right-hander has slipped a bit, with the walks becoming more of a problem than they were earlier in the year.
He still brings a deep mix, using a four-seamer as his main pitch and layering in a sweeper, sinker, splitter, curve and cutter. The fastball keeps him in the zone, and his extension remains elite in the 97th percentile, which helps explain why the Braves were put in a difficult spot on paper. Perez, meanwhile, has worked his way to a 3.05 ERA in the 2026 season, a number that looks better than the underlying performance may fully support.
That is where the real edge of this game lives. Perez has been the kind of veteran who can soak up innings, but his run prevention has carried more luck than dominance, and the Phillies have not made life easy for left-handed pitching in general. They have also struggled on offense this year, which gives Perez a path to hold down a lineup that still includes Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.
The Braves have not treated the night like a one-man script, either. Walt Weiss has continued to shake up the lineup, a sign that Atlanta is still searching for the right mix as it moves deeper into the NL East race. But the center of the game remains the same: Perez against Wheeler, one left-hander trying to turn a favorable setup into a clean start, and one right-hander trying to steady himself after a rougher stretch.
By the time the game begins at Citizens Bank Park, the question will not be whether the matchup matters. It already does. The only question left is whether Perez can turn that platoon advantage into something real against a Phillies lineup that still has enough power to punish a mistake.
