Kirk Ferentz is taking Iowa into Saturday's opener without a named starting quarterback, and both Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown will get snaps against Northern Illinois as the staff keeps sorting out the job.
That makes this week matter now because Iowa is finally at game week and the competition is no longer theoretical. The Hawkeyes are No. 22 in the preseason Top 25 poll, but the first real answer they need is who handles the offense when the season begins.
Ferentz said Tuesday that he is not ready to pick one quarterback over the other, saying the staff needs more evidence and that the next step is seeing how the two perform in games. He added that it is not fair to say one is far ahead of the other, and said the team will keep an open mind and let the situation play out.
Hecklinski brings the least game experience into the race. He transferred to Iowa last year after taking three total snaps in his freshman season in 2024 at Wake Forest. Brown arrived with a longer resume, spending the 2023 and 2024 seasons at Auburn and starting twice before joining Iowa last year. Both are trying to replace Mark Gronowski, who quarterbacked Iowa to nine wins last year.
That is the friction point for Iowa. The opener is here, the ranking says the season begins with expectations, and the quarterback room still does not have a public answer. Ferentz did not try to hide that uncertainty, saying the staff will probably have more evidence after Saturday and will keep riding with it if the choice is not obvious.
For now, the most important next step is not a depth chart announcement but what Iowa sees against Northern Illinois. If one quarterback separates himself, the debate could narrow quickly. If neither does, Iowa will leave Saturday with the same question it brought into the week.
