Delaware opens its 2026 season against Merrimack on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Stadium, with Nick Minicucci set to lead the offense and Ryan Carty entering his fifth season as coach. It is the first real test of a year that begins with expectations attached to both the quarterback and the program.
Minicucci arrives at the opener with Conference USA preseason Offensive Player of the Year recognition after a 2025 season that put him among the nation’s most productive dual-threat passers. He was one of just two quarterbacks last year to finish with at least 3,500 passing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, a list that also included Diego Pavia. That production has made the Merrimack vs Delaware search one of the more relevant ones around the schedule, because the game offers the first live look at how Delaware plans to build on it.
Minicucci, though, is not treating any of the preseason praise as something he has earned. He said he does not accept those honors because they are preseason awards, calling them outside noise and asking why he should care about something he has not earned yet. He said the only thing that matters is what happens on Thursday, and that his focus is on winning a Conference USA championship rather than collecting personal recognition.
Carty has seen that edge up close. He said Minicucci is always asking for more and never behaves like a player satisfied with where he is. That matters for Delaware because the quarterback is stepping into a season in which the offense is expected to keep moving the ball through him, even after the team threw 540 passes last year, the second-most among FBS teams behind Florida Atlantic's 582.
The opener also comes with a home-field backdrop that has become part of Carty's record. He has never lost a home opener in his coaching career, and Delaware is 23-4 at home under him. The Blue Hens also will not look exactly like they usually do, with blue jerseys and white pants replacing the traditional yellow for this one.
That combination makes Sept. 3 more than a date on the calendar. It is the first chance to see whether a quarterback with major preseason attention can turn that into the kind of start Delaware wants, or whether the first answer of the year will come from how quickly Minicucci and the offense settle around the new pieces around him.
