Tarleton State opens the 2026 season against Prairie View A&M in Week 0, and the matchup lands with the feel of an early measuring stick. One team is coming off a 12-win season and its first trip to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs. The other arrives as the SWAC champion, trying to defend a title it had not won in 16 years.
That is why Preston Brown matters here. Prairie View A&M brought in the senior quarterback from Catawba College after he threw for 2,755 yards and 26 touchdowns there, and he steps into a game that will say a lot about how quickly the offense can settle after major turnover. Prairie View A&M also lost receiver Jyzaiah Rockwell and signal caller Cameron Peters from last season's offense, so Brown's first public test comes before league play even begins.
The game also gives Tremaine Jackson and Prairie View A&M a chance to show that last fall was not a one-year spike. Jackson, hired from Valdosta State last offseason, won ten games in his first year and led Prairie View A&M to its first SWAC title in 16 years. That run ended in the Celebration Bowl, where Prairie View A&M lost in four overtimes, a reminder that a breakthrough can still leave room between where a team has been and where it wants to go.
Tarleton State is trying to keep its own momentum rolling under Todd Whitten. Whitten has compiled a 126-59 overall record between Tarleton State and Sam Houston, has guided his teams to the postseason seven times and won his first UAC championship in 2025. He has not had a losing record with Tarleton State since moving up to the FCS in 2020, and the Texans enter the preseason polls at No. 5 after last fall's run.
Prairie View A&M, meanwhile, is leaning on a roster that still has to prove it can replace production as well as it can win games. The Panthers brought in 16 players from the Division II ranks over the offseason, and running back Chase Bingmon returns after leading the team with 873 yards and eight scores last season. That gives Jackson options, but it also leaves the opener in a narrow place: a defending champion with new pieces, a ranked opponent with a history of finishing fast, and a quarterback competition that still has not been named publicly.
So Week 0 is more than a date on the calendar for Tarleton State and Prairie View A&M. It is the first hard answer for Brown, for Jackson's title defense and for Whitten's latest high-expectation team. The next thing to know is simple: the season opens here, and Prairie View A&M still has to show who will take the first snap.
