The deal gives Jacksonville another quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence and Nick Mullens, while Miami parts with the 2025 seventh-round pick who finished last season as its starter. Carter Bradley and rookie UDFA Joey Aguilar are also on the Jaguars' roster, and Cam Miller remains with the Dolphins after Miami added him off Las Vegas' practice squad before Week 18 last season.
That is the part that makes the move harder to file as routine. Miami is moving on from Ewers even though he closed last season as the Dolphins' starting quarterback, a sign the team has already shifted away from the quarterback group that included Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson. Tagovailoa was the most expensive cut in NFL history, Wilson signed with the Saints, and the rest of the room changed with them.
For Jacksonville, the trade is less about headlines than insurance. Trevor Lawrence remains the centerpiece, Mullens is entering the second season of a two-year, $4.5MM deal, and if the Jaguars ever cut him they would save $1.2MM while taking on $1.3MM in dead money. Ewers slides into that structure as depth, not a challenge to the top job, but as a quarterback the Jaguars clearly thought was worth bringing in before the season hardens into place.
The open question is what Miami saw in the numbers or the roster that made the move make sense after Ewers had already handled the end of last season.
