Villanova opens its Patriot League debut on Friday night with a game that says as much about uncertainty as it does about the calendar. William & Mary visits at 6 p.m. on Aug. 28, and both teams are heading into the season opener without a settled quarterback.
That is why W&M vs Villanova is drawing attention now. + has the broadcast, Fox Sports lists Villanova as a -543 money-line favorite, and the line sits at Villanova -11.5 with an over/under of 50.5. The numbers point to a clear favorite, but the quarterback questions keep the matchup from feeling routine.
William & Mary comes in after a 7-5 season under Mike London, who is entering his eighth year with the program. Tyler Hughes handled much of the position last season before transferring to Wyoming for his final season of eligibility, leaving Carter Carroll and Winston Watkins as the options. Watkins arrives from Towson, and William & Mary will need one of them to settle the offense quickly if it wants to keep pace on the road.
Villanova has its own question at the most important spot. Robert Russo or Nolan DiLucia is expected to start, while Pat McQuaide's eligibility for Patriot League matchups is still up in the air. That leaves the Wildcats with continuity everywhere else but the one place that usually decides September games. Braden Reed, Ja’briel Mace, Isaiah Ragland, Chris McCullers and Kyle Fay give them pieces to work with, but continuity only matters if the quarterback can make it count.
The rest of the matchup points to a game built on established skill players and a defense that can change field position in a hurry. William & Mary has Andrew King, who had 52 touches for 353 yards and four touchdowns, Jah’Kei Chavis, who totaled 81 touches for 447 yards and four scores, and Sean McElwain, a preseason All-Patriot League pick after seven catches for 186 yards and three touchdowns in seven games. On the other side, Villanova leans on Davin Dzidzienyo and Bryce Barnes on defense, Harrison Johnson after 84 tackles last season, and Stephon Hicks, who blocked four punts.
For Villanova, this is more than a season opener. It is the first test of what the Wildcats look like now that they are in Patriot League play, and it comes with a quarterback decision that still has not been settled in public. If Russo or DiLucia gives them stability, the favorite's edge should hold. If not, the opener could turn into a much tighter game than the line suggests.
