He went undrafted in 2024, signed with the Vikings, and has spent the last two seasons on the team’s practice squad, leaving him in the narrow lane where every practice rep carries extra weight.
His lone game action last season came in Week 18, when he was elevated and returned two punts for five yards. That was not a breakout, but it was proof that the Vikings had seen enough to give him a look when the roster was stretched. The suspension changes the math again, because a player trying to earn trust now has a three-game absence waiting as soon as the ban starts.
There is also the odd timing of it. Jones has already been punished, yet he is not barred from working this week or taking part in the preseason finale, which means the Vikings can keep evaluating him right up to the cutdown deadline. That leaves Minnesota with a familiar choice in hard form: keep a player whose future is clouded by a suspension, or move on before the regular season begins.
For Jones, the immediate question is less about the suspension itself than about whether he is still on the roster when the calendar turns to Sunday afternoon. If he is, the Vikings will have to plan without him for the first three games; if he is not, the punishment will have arrived before his chance to turn a practice-squad path into something more permanent.
