Allen Robinson II retired from the NFL on Monday, choosing his 33rd birthday to make the announcement in an Instagram post. The former Steelers WR Allen Robinson closed out an 11-season career that ended with him playing in Detroit in 2024.
Robinson wrote that football gave him more than he ever could have imagined and said he was leaving with gratitude. He did not say in the post whether the decision came because of injury, fading production or simply the right moment to step away, only that the next chapter had begun.
That ending lands with weight because Robinson was not a fringe player on the way out. The Jacksonville Jaguars picked him in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Penn State, and he broke through after the following season by making the Pro Bowl, tying the league lead with 14 touchdown receptions. His career later took him to the Bears, where he returned from an ACL injury in Week 1 of 2017 and signed a three-year, $42 million contract soon after.
He gave the Bears one of the most productive stretches of his career. In 2018, he helped them win their first division title in eight years and finished a playoff loss to the Eagles with 10 catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. Robinson then became the third Bear ever to post back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons in 2019-20 and later earned the Good Guy Award for his professionalism with the media.
His final NFL stop came with Detroit in 2024, after he played on the franchise tag in 2021 and later signed a three-year deal with the Rams. He finished with 565 catches for 7,058 yards and 43 touchdowns, numbers that place him among the more accomplished receivers of his era even if the last page came without a detailed explanation. For Robinson, the farewell is complete; what remains is the question he chose not to answer in public — what, exactly, made 33 the right age to stop.
