Chelsea have tied João Pedro to the club until 2034, a move announced on Saturday that shuts down one reported route to Barcelona and leaves one of the Premier League side’s fastest-rising forwards off the market. The Brazil forward said he was happy to commit for the long term and that he has felt at home in London since joining.
The timing matters because Joao Pedro has spent the season making himself impossible to ignore. Since arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025, he has scored in both the semi-final and final of the FIFA Club World Cup, struck twice against Fluminense to send Chelsea through, and then scored against PSG in the final as Chelsea lifted the title.
He has carried that form into the 2025-2026 season. He scored Chelsea’s opener away at West Ham United, netted the only goal at Tottenham Hotspur and scored twice against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League. By the end of the campaign, he had 20 goals in all competitions and had been voted Chelsea's Player of the Season by supporters.
That is why Barcelona’s interest mattered. Deco had been linked with Joao Pedro as a centre-forward option, but Chelsea’s new contract closes that door for now. The deal announcement does not spell out any extra terms beyond the 2034 end date, but the message is clear enough: Chelsea are building around a player who has already delivered goals in big moments and does not sound as if he is looking elsewhere.
Joao Pedro said he had a very good relationship with everyone at the club and repeated that he was fully committed. For Barcelona, that leaves a gap in a position they were said to be tracking, while Chelsea get the simpler part of the equation done early. The unresolved detail is not whether he belongs at the centre of Chelsea’s plans — that much is obvious — but what exact shape, if any, the long deal takes beyond the date that now runs to 2034.
