The Cleveland Guardians and Colorado Rockies opened a three-game series Friday night at Coors Field, with first pitch set for 8:40 p.m. ET and Joey Cantillo on the mound for Cleveland.

For the Guardians, this is a chance to steady a season that has left them 62-66 and third in the AL Central. Cantillo came in 9-7 with a 3.80 ERA, giving Cleveland a starter carrying better results than the club behind him.

The Rockies entered at 50-77 and fifth in the NL West, and Tanner Gordon was listed as the expected starter rather than a confirmed one. That distinction matters because it leaves a small opening before the first pitch, the kind that can come from an injury decision, a late change, or simply a team waiting until the last possible moment to lock in its arm.

Colorado’s pitching situation already looked thin. Rhys Hoskins was on the 10-day IL with a back injury, Slade Cecconi was on the 15-day IL with an arm injury, and Shawn Armstrong was on the 60-day IL with a leg injury. Hunter Goodman, Tyler Freeman, Sean Sullivan, Chase Dollander, Kris Bryant, José Quintana, McCade Brown, RJ Petit, Welinton Herrera and Pierson Ohl were also on the injured list, while Kyle Freeland was day-to-day with a neck issue.

That is why Friday’s opener carried more weight than a routine first game of a series. With the Guardians trying to take the first step in a road set and the Rockies still sorting through bodies as well as results, the matchup at Coors Field was as much about who could take the ball as what happened after it.

The next two games were not detailed, but the opener set the tone for a three-game series that already hinged on the simplest question in baseball: who is available, and who can hold up long enough to matter.
