Adonai Mitchell kept winning his matchup with Azareye’h Thomas on Tuesday, turning another Jets training camp practice into evidence that he is pressing hard for a larger role at wide receiver. The repeated wins came in a session that also included Thomas later intercepting an errant pass from Cade Klubnik, but Mitchell had already done enough to stand out.
That matters because the Jets are still looking for a receiver who can complement Garrett Wilson, and Mitchell has become the clearest candidate so far. He has been one of the standout performers in camp, using speed to stretch the field and make plays downfield while building on the momentum he showed in the offseason program. Mitchell and Geno Smith have also linked up on several explosive plays, a sign that the connection is growing at the right time.
The interest around Mitchell is easy to understand. New York acquired him from Indianapolis last November in the trade that sent Sauce Gardner to the Colts, and the deal also brought back two first-round picks. Mitchell played only eight games for the Jets after arriving, which left little time to show whether he could become more than a flash of talent. Now, in 2026 camp, he is making a stronger case that the answer can be yes.
There is still a gap between practice and the regular season, and that is the part the Jets cannot ignore. Mitchell has looked like a receiver who can threaten defenses deep, but the roster question is not whether he can win a few one-on-one reps in August. It is whether he can hold that edge once opponents start keying on Wilson and forcing New York to prove it has another dependable option.
For now, Mitchell has done what the Jets needed him to do. He has kept showing up, kept beating coverage and kept making the argument that his second year with the team could mean a bigger place in the passing game.
