Coventry City have completed the signing of Dan Bentley from Wolves on a two-year contract, adding a 33-year-old goalkeeper with Premier League experience as they prepare for their return to the top flight. Bentley, who made 17 senior appearances for Wolves after arriving in January 2023, now walks into a squad where he must compete with Carl Rushworth for the gloves rather than take the number one shirt by default.
The timing matters because Coventry are about to begin their Premier League return away to Arsenal on Friday night, and goalkeeping depth has suddenly become one of the first stories of their season. Bentley said he was delighted to get the move done, calling Coventry City a fantastic club and saying he would bring experience, leadership qualities and high standards while trying to help the club get results in the Premier League.
Those are not empty words. Bentley won Player of the Year honours at Bristol City in 2020-21 and showed he can still deliver in a big moment when he kept a clean sheet in Wolves' 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in April 2025. That record gives Coventry a veteran option with evidence behind him, not just a name on a contract.
The contest for the starting spot is the part that gives this move its edge. Coventry had already been expected to rely on Rushworth, and Bentley's arrival does not remove that plan so much as sharpen it, because the club now has two senior keepers who can be asked to justify the shirt on merit. For Frank Lampard, that is a useful problem to have ahead of a season that will test whether Coventry can settle quickly after the jump up.
Bentley's arrival looks less like a simple depth signing than a direct challenge to the hierarchy in goal, and the next answer will come on the pitch, not in the paperwork. If he wins the job early, Coventry have added competition and leadership in one move; if he does not, they still have a proven keeper ready when the season starts to stretch.
