Islam Makhachev said Usman Nurmagomedov is ready to fight for a UFC title tomorrow, even as the longtime free agent still has not chosen his next move after finishing his PFL contract. Makhachev made the comment during UFC 330 media day and framed Nurmagomedov as someone who could step straight into the division’s top end.
The reason the remark landed so sharply is simple: Nurmagomedov, 28, is coming off a first-round knockout over Archie Colgan and carries a perfect 22-0 record with one no contest. Makhachev said he has known him since he was very young and that he has trained with Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov his whole life, which, in his view, makes the leap look natural rather than rushed.
Makhachev also said Nurmagomedov did his job great in PFL and is ready to show the same level in the UFC. He described him as a fighter with wrestling, striking and grappling that can hold up against elite competition, and said the move could put him into immediate contention if a deal is struck.
That is where the message splits. Makhachev said Nurmagomedov could face Arman Tsarukyan or Max Holloway in a UFC debut, but he also said a title shot should not come first. In his view, Nurmagomedov should feel the UFC atmosphere, the media pressure and the pace of the promotion through one fight before he gets a crack at the belt.
The shift matters because the old obstacle is gone. Nurmagomedov had previously held back from joining the UFC roster while Makhachev ruled the 155-pound division, but Makhachev now holds the title at welterweight, removing that personal roadblock. What remains is a practical choice for Nurmagomedov, who has said legacy and money will guide the next signing decision, and a simple one for the UFC: one fight first, or a title run immediately.
