Leonard Williams says the trade to the Seattle Seahawks did more than move him across the country. It steadied him. Nearly three years after Seattle acquired him from the New York Giants, Williams says the move gave him and his wife a beautiful reset and helped turn his career around.
He said leaving New York after nine years in a city he described as hustle-bustle helped calm his nervous system. That mattered because Williams tied his best work not to one play or one coaching move, but to the people and the environment around him. In his telling, the shift in Seattle changed how he felt about football as much as how he played it.
Williams has been in the middle of a career that already had enough wear and tear to test his patience. He said that on the East Coast he went year after year through losing seasons, new coaching staffs and fresh team cultures every two or three years, while also dealing with injuries. By Year 8, he said, he was already wondering whether the end was near even though he believed he still had plenty left.
Then came Seattle in 2023. Williams said he kept pushing, kept fighting and eventually found himself in a place where everything started to click again. The Seahawks saw enough in him to make the trade nearly three years ago, and since then he has been incredibly dynamic. For Seattle, that made the move more than a roster adjustment. It became one of the defining bets of the stretch, because it brought in a player who says stability mattered as much as scheme.
The unresolved question is not whether Williams felt better in Seattle. It is how much of the turnaround belongs to the setting, and how much belongs to the player who lasted through the instability long enough to find it. Williams’s answer points to both. He needed a place that fit, and once he found it, he says he turned his career around.
