The Carolina Panthers signed Kyle Trask ahead of Sunday's practice and cleared room by waiving/injuring Malick Meiga and Nick Hampton. The move gives the team a fourth quarterback as it turns to a new practice week.
Trask worked out for the Panthers last week, and that look appears to have led directly to the signing. He arrives with familiarity built in: he previously overlapped with Dave Canales and Brad Idzik when all were with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
For the Panthers, the timing matters because the roster change lands immediately before practice, not after it. That means Trask can be folded into the quarterback work now, rather than waiting for a later opening, while Meiga and Hampton are the ones pushed off the active mix in the same move.
Trask was originally drafted out of the Univ. of Florida in the second-round of the 2021 draft, spent four seasons with the Bucs and then the 2025 season with the Falcons. In other words, the Panthers are not just adding another arm; they are adding a quarterback who has already crossed paths with part of the coaching staff and who has moved through multiple stops before arriving in CHARLOTTE.
The larger question now is not how the signing happened, but where Trask fits once Sunday's practice starts. The Panthers already describe him as a fourth quarterback, which leaves the job of sorting the depth chart to the field rather than the transaction wire.
