The Chicago Sky are listed as a +7.5 underdog against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday, Aug. 12, and the call is for Chicago to stay inside the number. The same game is also projected to stay Under, with Kamilla Cardoso singled out again as the best player angle.
That search interest comes from a matchup that should be shaped by pace and defense more than volume scoring. Golden State is averaging 83.3 points per game while shooting 42.5% from the field, but it is also holding opponents to 77.1 points per game. That kind of profile is why the market can hang a sizable line and still invite interest on the dog, especially when the Sky have gone 9-2 against the spread in their last 11 contests.
Cardoso is the one player whose recent production fits the game script best. She is averaging 8.7 rebounds per game this season, but she has pulled down 9 or more boards in four of her last five games. She has also scored at least 14 points in each of her last four games, is averaging 14.4 points and 2.5 assists per game, and has posted at least 25 PRA in each of those four outings. A rebound line at 8.5 is not random; it sits right on the edge of her season average and just below the run she has been on, which is why the number matters here.
Golden State’s defense helps explain the Under lean, but it does not erase the case for Chicago. The Valkyries are winning more with resistance than pace, and their own recent form has been less reliable against the spread, going 2-5 ATS in their last seven games. Chicago has also been solid in specific shot suppression, holding opponents to a 29.5% three-point rate and to 31.9% from beyond the arc when it is not chasing them off the line. That gives the Sky a path to keep the score manageable even if the home side controls more of the night.
The catch is that Golden State’s defensive number is still strong enough to keep the margin tight only if Chicago holds up on the other end. If the current +7.5 is still available at tipoff, that is the number the market will be judged against; if it has moved, the value case changes with it. Either way, Wednesday’s game is set up less as a shootout than a test of whether Chicago can keep a defensive game close long enough to cash.
