The Social Security Administration added 14 conditions to its Compassionate Allowances list on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, opening a faster path for disability claims tied to severe medical diagnoses. The list now covers 314 conditions.
The change matters because the program is built to move the most serious claims ahead of the usual process. Social Security says the list has helped 1.2 million people receive approval for disability benefits, and for listed conditions applications can be scanned by technology and approved quickly, sometimes within days.
Compassionate Allowances was created in 2008 to accelerate claims for people with rare, life-threatening or otherwise severe medical conditions. This latest expansion adds rare pediatric and neurological disorders, along with Aicardi syndrome and primary cardiac sarcoma, to a list that has become one of the agency’s main shortcuts for the hardest cases.
That shortcut still sits inside a slower system. The Social Security Administration says a typical disability application can take six to eight months to receive approval, which is why the fast-track list draws so much attention whenever it grows.
Frank Bisignano said the program “cuts through red tape” and lets the agency deliver support to people facing life-changing diagnoses who need help fast. The new additions sharpen that promise, but the agency has not said when the 14 conditions will fully enter the review system or whether more additions are coming next.
