Kilmarnock stayed in the game because Max Stryjek kept Celtic from turning a 1-0 lead into something wider. The goalkeeper tipped Benjamin Nygren's shot onto the bar, blocked Kasper Hogh's header and then saw Kilmarnock scramble clear at the second rebound.
That was the reason Kilmarnock Vs Celtic was being watched so closely in the Scottish Premiership: one side pushing forward in waves, the other hanging on through a goalkeeper who refused to let the match run away from them. Arne Engels had set up Celtic's goal, and his influence kept showing as the pressure returned again and again.
Stryjek was forced into another stop when Camilo Duran struck from the Celtic right, and the pattern did not ease. Arne Engels later came forward again and tested him from the inside left channel, only for Kilmarnock's keeper to stand up to it. Celtic had the ball, the territory and the chances, but they did not have the cushion they appeared to be building.
Kilmarnock, though, were not passive. They troubled Celtic at corners, with Joe Hugill's backheel flick deflecting out from one delivery and Tyreece John-Jules looping a header toward the top corner from another. Viljami Sinisalo tipped that effort over, and Greg Kiltie then got in behind the Celtic defence, stayed onside and tried to bend the ball to the far post before it was knocked out for another corner.
That mix of pressure and resistance is what made the moment matter. Chris Sutton captured it best when he said he could not understand how one chance did not end up in the back of Celtic's net, while Pat Bonner said Kasper Hogh's maiden club goal would give him real confidence and noted that a striker who has just joined a club wants to get off the mark quickly. Hogh is Celtic's new number nine, and Bonner added that it was the perfect start for him, with Arne Engels' run opening the move.
The only unresolved question is how long Kilmarnock can keep asking Stryjek to do that work. For now, the goalkeeper has kept them one down, and Celtic have not turned control into safety.
