Irad Ortiz Jr. was knocked out of the rest of his Saratoga card on Saturday after he was dismounted before a maiden race and hurt an ankle. He was ruled out through Sunday, and his absence forced changes across several stakes rides on the Whitney card.
The first switch came in the G1 Whitney, where Micah Husbands took over on White Abarrio. Ortiz was also replaced on On Time Girl in the G1 Test by Dylan Davis, on Rhetorical in the G1 Fourstardave by Manny Franco, and on McCready in the G1 Saratoga Derby by Júnior Alvarado. By Sunday, Doncho in the G2 Troy also needed a new rider.
That made the injury one of the day’s biggest moving parts at Saratoga, because Ortiz was not sitting out a single race. He had been named on the main field for eight other races and was also eligible in one more, so the loss rippled beyond the headline mounts and into the rest of the card.
The reporting on the injury was not perfectly consistent, but the underlying picture was the same. Steve Rushing described it as a left foot injury in a Saturday evening text update and said Ortiz was off on Sunday with an appointment with a specialist the next day. Keith McCalmont described it as a left-ankle injury after And the Runner Is acted up ahead of race 8, then said Ortiz was taken to Saratoga Hospital for further evaluation. The difference is mostly one of wording; both descriptions point to the same side of the body and the same interruption to his riding schedule.
The incident itself was abrupt. José Ortiz told NYRA TV’s Maggie Wolfendale that Irad Ortiz Jr. was unseated where the horse headed back to his barn, after And the Runner Is bolted toward a closed gap and bounced off the outside rail. The horse was the odds-on favorite at the time of the parade incident, which only sharpened the impact of the fall because it came before the race even started.
For now, the key question is not whether the card felt the effect — it clearly did — but how long Ortiz will be away. He was already off his remaining mounts, and the planned specialist visit was the next step in figuring out whether the injury was a short interruption or something that will keep him out beyond Saratoga.
