Jackson Jobe is back. The Detroit Tigers activated him off the 60-day injured list on Saturday and sent him straight into their game against the San Francisco Giants for his season debut.
That return matters because the Tigers, who entered the night two games back of the final wild-card spot, needed innings and stability after spending most of this season without him. Jobe had missed most of the 2025 season and all of 2026 up to this point while recovering from Tommy John surgery, then worked through five rehab starts in the minors before rejoining the club.
He did not come back empty-handed. In those rehab outings, Jobe posted a 1.76 ERA over 15 1/3 innings, struck out 17 hitters and walked four, a line that suggests his arm is close to ready even if the Tigers have not said whether he is returning as a starter or in relief.
The timing also fits the shape of the trip. Detroit opened the day at 5-2 on its West Coast swing, a run that began in July with a series against the Athletics in West Sacramento, and the Giants game at 7:15 p.m. gave the club a chance to keep momentum while adding a pitcher it has not had for much of the past two seasons.
That addition carries extra weight because Detroit is still trying to stay alive in the race after dealing Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize at the trade deadline. Bringing Jobe back now gives the Tigers another arm for the stretch, but the open question is the one that matters most: how they plan to use him from here.
For now, the answer is only that Jobe is back on the roster and back in a game that means something. What happens next will tell whether this is a one-night boost, or the start of the rotation help Detroit has been waiting on since spring.
