Luke Kuechly got his gold jacket from Julius Peppers on Friday night at the Gold Jacket Dinner in Canton, Ohio, turning a formal Hall of Fame ritual into a Panthers reunion with real weight. By the time Peppers slipped the jacket on, Kuechly was already standing with his grandmothers, parents, brothers and girlfriend on stage, and the room had the feel of a family celebration that happened to include football history.
That is why the 2026 NFL Hall of Fame class buzzed around Kuechly before the jacket even went on. Fans had begun an unprompted Keep Pounding chant as he moved through a gauntlet of Hall of Famers, and 120 Hall of Famers were in the building that night. Dan Fouts introduced all of them in 42 minutes, a long roll call that still could not dull the size of the moment.
Peppers was Hall of Famer No. 377. Kuechly is No. 386, a number that marks his place in the Hall even before the enshrinement ceremony arrives. Around him at the Canton Civic Center were former teammates Cam Newton, Greg Olsen, Ryan Kalil, Jonathan Stewart and JJ Jansen, along with Larry Fitzgerald, Drew Brees, Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig, who by night's end were described as his four new teammates. The crowd made the dinner feel crowded and intimate at the same time.
That mix of family, old teammates and Hall of Famers also explained the one absence that hung over the evening without being named outright. Kuechly said it would have been special if one of the legendary linebackers there had handled the jacket or the knock, but he also made clear that having Peppers do it was a different kind of perfect. He called the choice super cool because Peppers was Peppers, the player he had once stared at in pictures on the wall and the teammate he finally got to share the field with late in his career.
Peppers, who retired in 2017 and 2018, said he and Kuechly have a lot of similarities as teammates and leaders. He said Kuechly sometimes does not realize how good he is, and he argued that the new Hall of Famer deserves to be celebrated the right way. At Canton, the jacket ceremony did exactly that, and the next stop now is the enshrinement itself, where Kuechly will move from the dinner table to the stage as a full Hall of Famer.
