Alina Korneeva beat No. 23 seed Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-2 at the National Bank Open in Toronto on Wednesday, and the result gave the 19-year-old her first Top 30 victory. It also sent her into the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time, the clearest sign yet that her 2026 surge is becoming more than a good run.
The win lands at a moment when Korneeva’s name is being searched for the right reasons. She opened 2026 at No. 210, broke into the Top 100 in June and is No. 89 this week after compiling a 35-13 record. She also won her first WTA 125 title in Oeiras in February, qualified for Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and reached her second tour-level semifinal in Athens last month. She said the result over Navarro gives her confidence, but only if she can hold onto it.
That caution matters because her rise has been interrupted before it could fully take shape. Korneeva finished 2023 as the junior No. 1 after winning both the Australian Open and Roland Garros girls’ titles, then qualified for the 2024 Australian Open, reached the second round and climbed to a career-high No. 128 the following month. A wrist injury required surgery and kept her out for seven months, then an adductor injury forced her to miss most of the first half of 2025, leaving the path from junior standout to tour-level threat far less direct than it once looked.
Korneeva said recovering from the wrist surgery took nine months and that she lost “the rhythm of the game, the rhythm of competition and rhythm of fighting.” She said she expected to return quickly, only to spend another six months away. During that time she built miniature models and mosaics, including a tiny cafeteria and a portrait of her parents, to keep her hands and mind busy. The contrast is sharp: on one side, a player now beating a seeded opponent in straight sets; on the other, a career that has already been forced to restart more than once.
What comes next is the part that will show whether this is a breakout or a recovery that has finally caught up with her talent. Korneeva has already proved she can win from outside the Top 100 and now from inside it too. The harder test is whether the body stays on schedule long enough for the ranking to keep moving the same way.
