The Chicago White Sox designated Everson Pereira for assignment on the heels of the Brenton Doyle trade, a move that pushes the outfielder onto waivers and may end his time on the major league roster.
Pereira, 24, played in just 27 games this season and hit.225/.284/.438 with four home runs. Even in a limited role, he flashed enough to matter: he had two extra-base hits on Sunday and posted a.269/.367/.423 line against left-handers. But after the Doyle deal, the White Sox no longer had a clear use for him as a right-handed-hitting fourth outfielder.
That is the part that stands out. The White Sox made the move even though Pereira’s recent production compared favorably with Brenton Doyle’s this year. Doyle, who has two Gold Gloves, played in 45 games and hit.214/.287/.282 with one home run. He carries a.670 career OPS, with a high of.764 in 2024, and the roster decision makes clear which side of the equation Chicago valued more in this moment.
The White Sox are not committing to Pereira’s exit yet, but they are no longer controlling it directly. He will be subject to waivers, which means another club can claim him before he lands anywhere else. If he clears, he will likely stay in Triple-A. That leaves him in a familiar spot after a season that already included health trouble and a changing role following the White Sox’s offseason trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, when they brought in Pereira and Tanner Murray for Yoendrys Gómez and Steven Wilson.
For Chris Getz, the roster math is getting sharper by the day. The White Sox have made multiple moves around the trade deadline, and this one shows a preference for defense over offense even when the bat has some recent life. Pereira still has a chance to stay in the organization, but the next step now belongs to waivers, not Chicago.
