Talia Gibson turned a difficult stretch into a sharp response on Wednesday AEST, beating Maja Chwalińska 7-5, 6-1 at the Canadian Open in Toronto and moving into the round-of-32. The 22-year-old now gets 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova next, after a win that looked more controlled than the scoreline first suggests.
That matters because Gibson arrived in Toronto after five straight losses against top-50 players on clay and grass, a run that came after she climbed to a career-high world ranking of No.55 on the back of five top-20 scalps in three weeks in the United States in March, including Naomi Osaka. On hard court, though, she again looked far more settled, and she said before the match that she wanted to keep pressure off herself and find her rhythm rather than think about results.
The match itself showed why that mindset counted. Chwalińska, the 18th seed, had reached the French Open final as a qualifier before losing to Mirra Andreeva in June, but Gibson did not let that clay-court form carry over here. Chwalińska won just three points on serve in the second set, a number that tells the story of how quickly the contest slipped away once Gibson found her range and kept taking time from her opponent.
Gibson said she had watched enough of Chwalińska’s French Open run to expect variation, especially the drop shots and changes of pace that worked on clay. She also said the bigger question was how much of that game would translate to hard court, and her answer was to stay ready for anything, commit to her own patterns and attack when the opening came. It worked well enough to produce what she called some of her best tennis, and it sent her into a match with Alexandrova that will tell much more about how far this hard-court form can carry her.
The Canadian Open is now serving as a brief but important checkpoint before the US Open main draw begins on August 31 AEST, and Gibson has given herself a better path through it. If she can back up this win again, the March surge will no longer read like an isolated hot streak followed by a slump. It will look like the start of a player learning how to hold her level when the surface finally suits her.
