Robinson signed a three-year extension with the Atlanta Falcons around 48 hours before the update on Gibbs, and the move was expected to help set the market for a deal that might have followed quickly. Instead, Gibbs remained sidelined while the Lions kept working through the situation in camp.
That is why the issue has stayed in the spotlight. A week earlier, Dan Campbell said he was not sweating Gibbs’ hold-in, but he also admitted, “I thought we’d have been done by now.” Brad Holmes said Wednesday that the Detroit Lions were having dialogue with Gibbs and added, “that’s the hope.”
Those comments leave the picture somewhere between calm and concern. On one hand, the Lions have not treated the standoff like a crisis, and Holmes’ update at least confirms there are conversations underway. On the other, the lack of tangible progress means Gibbs is still not back in the work that matters most during training camp, and the longer that lasts, the less it looks like a quick formality.
The situation is still early, but it is no longer just a brief pause. The writer who framed the moment said Gibbs’ appearance at practices would have signaled good faith, and that Robinson’s extension should have moved things along relatively quickly. That did not happen by Thursday, and the next hard markers are the first preseason game and the end of preseason. If Gibbs is still out by then, the hold-in will have moved from a camp storyline into something much harder to shrug off.
