KNBR is changing its midday lineup again, and this time John Lund is the one coming back. He is expected to take over the slot solo starting August 10, ending the Greg Silver and Greg Papa show.
The move puts Greg Papa back at the center of the station’s latest shuffle. Papa has been away from the air for months after returning in September of last year, and his absence was tied to his battle with leukemia. He told the San Francisco Chronicle that he hoped to return to his daily KNBR program, and sources told Barrett Media that KNBR would have interest in a reunion if his health improves.
Lund’s return also resets a pairing that defined a large stretch of KNBR’s daytime schedule. He and Papa worked together for most of Papa’s Bay Area run from 2011 to 2024, before KNBR laid Lund off in November 2024 and moved Greg Silver into that spot. Silver, who joined KNBR in 2023 and has also hosted postgame coverage for Cal football, now gives way as the station brings Lund back in alone.
What makes the shift sharper is that Papa had recently been cleared by doctors to host shows from his home studio starting in late-July. That would have given KNBR a path to keep him involved without putting him back in the studio full time, but the station is instead ending the midday show he shared with Silver. The new setup leaves open one unresolved question: whether Papa will appear on KNBR again in any capacity after August 10.
The timing also lands during a wider round of layoffs at Cumulus Media, KNBR’s parent company, which makes the station’s midday reset look less like a one-off booking change and more like part of a broader tightening. KNBR has cycled through three different midday lineups in roughly 20 months, and the latest version restores Lund to a role he once held alongside Papa while leaving Papa’s future as the voice of the San Francisco 49ers uncertain.
