Arias always had support because the glove gave him a path that the bat never fully did. He was a well-regarded prospect, and his versatility let him cover any infield spot, but the offense never came around. What happens next is now defined by the waiver process. If another club claims Arias, he has to go straight onto that team’s major league roster, and the new club would gain control over three additional years. If he goes unclaimed, he has enough service time to reject an outright assignment to the minors and choose free agency instead. Either way, the Guardians have moved on, and Arias is the one left waiting for the next call.
If he is still on a 40-man roster in November, he would also be an obvious non-tender candidate, which makes this August decision the start of a search for a new fit rather than the end of one.
