The result mattered because the Warsaw T-Mobile Polish Open is a small draw, with only eight pairs in the doubles field, so one win carries a team directly into the last four. The prize on offer is 125 ranking points and 5,220 euro to share, and Kubka and Rosolska are now in position to fight for both.
Rosolska, 40, made the match carry extra weight. She has said farewell to her tennis career in Warsaw, yet her final run has not been a ceremonial walk-through. She and Kubka won their first match together at the end of that career and did it with a second set that never slipped away once they had taken the first on a tiebreak.
