The Detroit Tigers opened a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Tuesday night with Troy Melton on the mound for Detroit and Emerson Hancock starting for Seattle. The first pitch was scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET, and it came with one obvious change for the Tigers: their rotation had been thinned by the trade deadline, forcing them to fill a hole as the series began.
That mattered because Detroit arrived in Seattle after sweeping the Athletics in Sacramento and moving to within four games of.500. The Tigers had reason to feel better about the trip, but they also had a pitching puzzle to solve after Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize were shipped out at the trade deadline. By Tuesday night, the answer was Melton, who entered 6-1 with a 1.75 ERA and got the assignment in Game 113.
Hancock brought his own story to the matchup. The 27-year-old was in the middle of the best season of his four-year career, with a 2.29 ERA and 3.66 FIP over 19 2/3 innings in the month described, even after allowing 15 hits, two home runs and five walks while striking out 15. He had absorbed a 107.2 mph one-hopper off the bat of Yandy Diaz on July 12 that hit his pitching hand, and while the X-rays came back negative, the injury briefly threatened to slow him down.
He returned 10 days later for his third start of July and was back on the hill against Detroit with a 6-5 record and a 3.26 ERA. That made the opener less about a warmup for a long road trip than a test of how both clubs were holding up after recent blows to their pitching plans. Detroit still has two more games to navigate in the set, and the larger question is whether Melton can help the Tigers keep the rotation steady long enough for the standings to matter again.
