The Cleveland WNBA expansion team is set to reveal its nickname on Tuesday at Rocket Arena, and the latest clues have pushed Cleveland Sirens to the center of the conversation. Rock Entertainment Group is expected to make the announcement at 10 a.m., turning a run of hints into a moment fans have been waiting for since the franchise was awarded last year.
What made the tease land harder was how many places it showed up at once. On July 31, a mysterious sandcastle appeared at Edgewater Park in Cleveland with the words “Hear The Call” in blue coloring. On Aug. 1, photographer Gabe Wasylko posted images of “Hear the call” on Instagram, and the Cleveland WNBA team, Cavaliers and Cleveland Monsters social media accounts responded to the post, keeping the same phrase in circulation.
That is why the name search has narrowed so quickly. The franchise has already leaned into public guessing, including an April Fool’s Day joke a few months ago that used the name Ohio Wolverines, so the current run of clues feels less like random noise than a deliberate buildup. It also fits the background of a new team trying to establish an identity in a city that once had the Rockers, who played seven seasons from 1997 to 2003.
Still, the final step has not happened yet. Cleveland Sirens is the name being teased, but the official reveal is still tied to Tuesday’s announcement, which leaves room for the franchise to confirm the nickname, steer in another direction, or fold both the “Hear The Call” imagery and the Sirens theme into the same unveiling.
If the team does go with Cleveland Sirens, the choice would draw on Sirens in Greek mythology, female humanlike beings said to live on islands and to lure sailors with enchanting voices. That folklore dates back more than 2,000 years, which gives the name a built-in story beyond branding: a team tying itself to a figure that is both alluring and dangerous, and doing it on a day when the answer is finally supposed to come into focus.
