Vincent Kompany says Bayern Munich's preseason has taken on a different shape on Jeju, where players are returning at different times and some are only now coming off rehab. For the coach, that has turned a routine summer trip into a puzzle that has to be solved while the club tries to build match fitness before the season starts.
The Bayern coach said this is his third preseason at the club and that no two have looked the same. Last year, he said, the squad came through after the Club World Cup and had the full group back together only a very short time before the first matches. This time, the issue is not a late reunion of everyone at once. It is staggered returns, gradual reintegration and the need to protect players who are still coming back from injury.
That matters now because Bayern are in the middle of a trip built around travel, training and games in another country, with promotional and media events folded into the week as well. Kompany said the club welcomed the conditions on Jeju and stressed that the work has to stay serious and professional, whether the team is in Munich or elsewhere. He added that these trips are part of preseason for most teams, which is why the focus has to remain on preparation rather than distraction.
The friction is obvious. Bayern are trying to treat the week as a proper football camp, but the schedule is not only about football. Kompany told his players they would have to handle the off-pitch obligations and still stay focused, because the club cannot waste the chance to train and play under the best possible conditions. At the same time, he is trying to bring injured players back the right way, not all at once, and that means the squad may not feel settled for a while.
Bayern are expected to be among the favorites in Europe this season to win the Champions League, which makes the shape of this preseason more than a summer curiosity. Kompany said the club is confident it will gain the necessary match fitness and physical condition, even if the path there looks messy. For now, Jeju is less about a headline result than about whether Bayern can turn a complicated week into a clean start to the season.
