Brian Cashman said Monday night that the club explored adding shortstop or infield help but could not find a fit, adding that no major league shortstops moved at the deadline. He framed the outcome as business as usual and said a call-up for Lombard Jr. was not the case at that moment. He also said the bar for any addition was high and that the Yankees liked the players they have now and the players they have on the way.
That comfort exists alongside a number that explains the unease. The Yankees entered Monday with only 0.8 bWAR from their shortstops this season, a weak return for a position that can shape every game. The club also believes Lombard Jr. is already ready defensively for the big leagues, while still seeing the offense as something that has taken time to settle at each new level.
That leaves the deadline outcome looking less like an end than a pause. The Yankees did not bring in an outside solution, and Cashman’s comments pointed back to the same internal question that has hovered for weeks: whether Lombard Jr. gets the call during the final two months of the season, or whether Volpe and Caballero carry the position all the way through.
