The Rays are acquiring Tyler Wells from the Orioles in a trade reported Monday, sending the 31-year-old right-hander to Tampa Bay after a healthy 2026 season out of Baltimore’s bullpen. Prospect Michael Forret is going back to the Orioles, but it is not yet clear whether the swap ends there.
Jeff Passan first reported the deal at 4:05pm CDT on August 3, 2026, and the timing makes the move notable because Wells has spent most of the last two seasons trying to get back on the field. He missed most of 2024 and 2025 after surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, then returned this year and gave Baltimore 54 innings in relief with a 2.67 earned run average.
That kind of rebound helps explain why the trade stands out. The Orioles had already shifted Wells to the bullpen after he returned healthy, and he answered with a 25.1% strikeout rate, a 6.2% walk rate, a 3.41 FIP and a 3.47 SIERA. Earlier in his career, he had been viewed as a decent back-end starter, but this season showed he could still miss bats and limit damage in shorter outings.
The unresolved part is the package itself. Joel Sherman reported that Forret is part of what is heading back to the Orioles, while Darragh McDonald noted that it is unclear whether that is the whole deal or whether more players are involved. That leaves the headline move clear enough: Wells is changing clubs today, but the full cost of the trade has not yet been fully laid out.
If no more names are added, the Rays will be buying a pitcher who has already proven he can return from a long layoff and hold his own in a big league bullpen. If the deal grows, the extra piece will matter less than the broader message from both teams: Baltimore turned a comeback season into trade value, and Tampa Bay moved quickly to claim it.
