Ryan Zeferjahn took over in the eighth inning Sunday and finished the job, turning a brief high-leverage rescue into a five-out save in the Angels' 3-0 win over the Brewers. He allowed two hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter over 1.2 scoreless innings.
The outing mattered because it came in a spot that was not set up as a routine closing chance. Sam Bachman was lifted because of fatigue, and Zeferjahn had to step in with the lead already fragile. He responded by throwing 24 of 30 pitches for strikes and working around a pair of singles to keep the game clean.
That performance fits the season he has put together. Zeferjahn has held a high-leverage role for most of the campaign, and Sunday added another save to a line that already includes four saves and nine holds. Over 51.2 innings, he has posted a 3.66 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP, with 75 strikeouts and 32 walks.
His recent form has been even sharper than the season totals suggest. Over his last 12.1 innings, he has given up three runs, nine hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while striking out 21. In that span, he has also added two saves and three holds, the kind of stretch that keeps him squarely in the middle of the Angels' highest-pressure innings.
The open question is whether that hierarchy holds if Bachman's fatigue lingers. Zeferjahn has earned the next look by handling Sunday without a walk and with enough command to shut the door, but the bullpen order can change quickly when one reliever is unavailable. For now, he is the one who turned a shaken-up eighth inning into a save.
