That injury status is the part that most shapes the trade now. Bubic has made only nine starts this season, but he still posted a 4.11 ERA over 50.1 innings with 51 strikeouts, enough to keep him in demand even as the clock ran down with hours left before the trade deadline. He was an All-Star last year and will hit free agency at the end of this season, which gives the Dodgers only a short window to benefit if he returns quickly.
The surprise is not the pitcher himself. It is the fit. The Dodgers had already traded for Tarik Skubal before this move, so they were hardly short on pitching options, yet they still added another left-hander.
