That is why the list lands as more than a hot take: Adebayo, 29, left out a player many people still put at the center of any greatest-ever debate.
The timing gives the ranking extra weight. James chose the Philadelphia 76ers over a return to the Miami Heat after Miami had aggressively pursued him in unrestricted free agency and imagined a reunion once he told the Los Angeles Lakers he would not return. Adebayo's list arrives in that same window, when every word about James is being measured against what he meant to the Heat the first time around.
That is where the story gets interesting. Adebayo did not sound hostile or disappointed; he said he is happy for James and added, "You want what's best for somebody. That’s really how you go from there." But the praise sits beside the exclusion, and that is the point. He can call James a brother, share Olympic history with him and still leave him off his personal top five.
For now, the only clear answer is that Adebayo's list reflects his own standard, not the market's loudest consensus. James is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million veteran's minimum contract, and Adebayo has already drawn his line without him.
