FanGraphs’ latest trade deadline look at the Los Angeles Dodgers points to a familiar problem for a deep team: there may not be enough room for everyone once the injured players come back. Alex Call is among the names now being boxed out of playing time, with Eric Lauer and Ryan Ward also on the list of fringe players who could become expendable before the deadline.
The timing matters because the Dodgers are still in control of the NL West, sitting 12.5 games ahead, and that cushion gives them the freedom to think beyond August survival. With Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernández and Will Smith among the injured offensive players, and Edwin Díaz, Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell on the pitching side, Los Angeles has spent much of the summer covering gaps with players who may not fit once the roster is whole again. Andy Pages, Dalton Rushing and Justin Wrobleski have helped steady the club while injuries piled up, but the same wave that opened opportunities is now closing them.
That is where Call becomes such a useful name to watch. He is not being discussed as a centerpiece, but as a player who could still matter elsewhere if the Dodgers decide the roster squeeze is real enough to act on it. The same is true for Lauer, who could be moved to the bullpen if Los Angeles keeps everyone and simply tries to survive the crunch internally. FanGraphs also noted that the Dodgers could option a position player such as Alex Freeland or Call if injured players return, which shows how many moving parts are involved once rehab assignments turn into active roster decisions.
The friction is simple. A team with a 12.5-game lead can afford patience in the standings, but not necessarily on the roster. As August approaches and multiple players come off rehab assignments, Los Angeles will have to choose between preserving depth and clearing space for the next wave of healthy bodies. That is why the Dodgers’ deadline story may not turn on one blockbuster move. It may turn on which fringe players, including Call, are left without a seat when the injury log finally starts to shrink.
The Dodgers already showed they are willing to reshape the edges of the roster when they traded Caleb Ferguson to the Yankees for Christian Zazueta, and that history makes another move feel less like a surprise than a matter of when. The unresolved question is not whether Los Angeles has options. It is whether the next one involves trading a piece like Call, sending someone back to the minors, or shifting Lauer into a relief role just to keep the roster balanced.
