FanGraphs has updated its Sheehan Dodgers trade deadline guide, and the new read is plain: Los Angeles wants backup catcher help and high-end pitching. That is the kind of shopping list that matters because the Dodgers are already ahead by 12.5 games in the NL West, which gives them room to chase upgrades instead of merely patching holes.
The timing is right, too. With August approaching and the deadline drawing near, the Dodgers have a roster that can survive more than one path. Injuries to Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernández and Will Smith opened up offense, but Andy Pages and Dalton Rushing improved enough to keep the group moving. On the mound, Justin Wrobleski and several sophomore relievers helped steady things even as Edwin Díaz, Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell went down.
That is why the guide lands with more force than a routine prospect update. Los Angeles is not searching from weakness. FanGraphs described the Dodgers as carrying a top six pitching staff in most statistical categories despite the injuries, and that creates the oddest kind of deadline pressure: a team can be dominant and still decide it needs more. Edwin Díaz, Blake Snell and Enrique Hernández were on rehab assignments as the deadline approached, which only adds another layer to a roster already trying to fit too many capable pieces into too few active spots.
The names on the fringe show how the math could work. Eric Lauer, Alex Call and Ryan Ward could matter on other clubs, while Alex Freeland was described as a possible post-hype flier. If Los Angeles decides not to trade anyone, the path may be internal instead: option Freeland or Call, and move Lauer to the bullpen. The Dodgers already showed they are willing to deal from depth when they sent Caleb Ferguson to the Yankees for Christian Zazueta, and that makes the next move clearer than the market itself. This is a club with enough cover to stand pat, enough depth to reshuffle, and enough ambition to still chase one more premium arm.
