SSC CDMX deployed 2,365 security elements around Estadio Azteca for the Cruz Azul vs Atlante FC match on the night of the game, turning the stadium perimeter into one of the most heavily watched points in the city. The featured game of matchday 3 of the Torneo Apertura 2026 was set to begin at 21:00 hours, Mexico City time.
The operation was built to match the scale of the event. It included 1,605 police officers, 130 vehicles, one bus, 14 motorcycles, four tow trucks and one ambulance from the Escuadrón de Rescate y Urgencias Médicas. A helicopter from the Dirección General de Servicios Aéreos Cóndores flew preventive overflights until the end of the match, while 760 auxiliary police officers and 16 units watched entrances, exits, hallways and the field level.
That level of deployment was tied to a stadium night that drew attention well beyond the scoreboard. Cruz Azul entered the match unbeaten with two wins, after beating Atlético de San Luis 3-2 and Club Puebla 2-0, while Atlante FC was still searching for its first victory after a 2-1 loss at Club Necaxa and a 1-1 home draw against Águilas del Club América. For fans of Cruz Azul and Atlante, the security plan meant a tighter route into the stadium and a heavier police presence before the first whistle.
Authorities also reinforced access filters to stop prohibited objects from entering Estadio Azteca. Outside the venue, the Subsecretaría de Inteligencia e Investigación Policial monitored the area with support from a drone from the Unidad Águila, and the Subsecretaría de Control de Tránsito handled traffic and parking at the stadium accesses from opening until the end of the match. The operation covered the stadium, nearby streets and the flow of people moving in and out of the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.
The match may have been the headline, but the larger story was the control around it: a city security operation large enough to manage a full stadium night from the first arrival to the final exit. The only unresolved number is the crowd itself, which was not specified, even as the deployment showed the authorities were preparing for a busy evening at Estadio Azteca.
