Alianza Lima made three notable cuts before facing Alianza Atlético on Saturday at Estadio Alejandro Villanueva, leaving Luis Ramos, Kevin Quevedo and Piero Cari out of the squad. The list of convocados came before a home match that mattered because the team needed points in the Torneo Clausura and could not afford to fall behind the leaders.
The absence that drew the most attention was Ramos. He was not at 100% because of discomfort from an injury, and he had yet to score this season, so Pablo Guede kept him out rather than forcing a player who was not fully ready. That decision reduced one of Alianza Lima’s attacking options for a game in which the margin for error was already thin.
Alianza Lima had taken one win and one draw from its first two matches in the Torneo Clausura, a start that kept the pressure on every call to the squad. On that basis, the club’s selection for Saturday was more than a routine formality. It was a statement about who Guede trusted to handle a home match with points at stake.
Quevedo’s omission stood out for a different reason. He had no injury or physical discomfort, yet Guede still left him out for a technical decision. That is the kind of exclusion that tells you a coach is choosing structure over names, even when a player is available. Piero Cari fell into the same group, and his omission carried its own logic: he had started the season as a regular substitute, but as the months passed he lost prominence and began to play only a few minutes.
The three players also share one awkward fact. None of Ramos, Quevedo or Cari had debuted in the Torneo Clausura by that point. For Alianza Lima, that means the season’s early rotation has not yet produced a stable answer from any of them, whether because of fitness, form or a coach’s judgment. Guede has made clear that availability alone is not enough to buy a place in the squad.
What remains open is not whether the absences mattered — they did — but whether any of the three will force their way back into the call-up list soon. Ramos first needs to be fully recovered. Quevedo needs a technical case for selection. Cari needs to recover the minutes he lost as the season moved on. Until then, Saturday’s squad list reads as a snapshot of a coach narrowing his options rather than expanding them.
