That is why Sochan is being searched now. In a market where the final roster spots can vanish quickly, waiting carries its own risk.
Sochan is not being discussed as a polished scorer. He has not been a consistent rotation player for a while now, even though he has shown plenty of defensive promise. The offensive side is where the concerns remain. He is an unwilling shooter, and even when he lets it fly, the shot rarely goes in. That makes him a difficult fit for any team asking for more than stopgap minutes.
The Timberwolves interest makes sense only if the role is narrow. The report described very limited offensive responsibilities for Sochan on a Timberwolves team that already leans on Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball and Jaden McDaniels. Minnesota also needs defensive versatility to plug in next to Rudy Gobert and the core trio of perimeter starters, but Sochan’s lack of gravity could create spacing issues if the fit is pushed too far.
That is the part New York has to watch. The Knicks have been waiting patiently, but if the Timberwolves decide Sochan is the right end-of-bench swing, the open roster spots in New York become less of a cushion and more of a deadline. At that point, the question is not whether the Knicks have time. It is whether they still have the player they were hoping to keep on the board.
