The Mariners moved Luke Raley to the 10-day injured list on August 1 and brought Stuart Fairchild up from Triple-A, a roster switch that puts Fairchild on the active roster right away.
Raley’s placement was made retroactive to July 31 because of a left forearm strain, which leaves Seattle without one of its regular options until further notice. Fairchild is the player the Mariners chose to fill that opening, and the move became simple because the club already had two open spots on its 40-man roster.
That detail matters because it meant no extra transaction was needed to make room for Fairchild. In other words, Seattle could turn to Triple-A and add him without juggling another roster piece first, which is not always the case when a club reaches for help during the season.
The unanswered part is how long Raley will be out. A 10-day injured-list move sets the minimum absence, not the finish line, and the strain in his left forearm is what will determine whether Seattle gets him back soon or has to wait longer. For now, Fairchild is the name the Mariners have added and Raley is the one they have had to shelve.
