Bill Belichick hired him in December 2024, and Lombardi now serves as UNC's football general manager, one of the most visible front-office jobs attached to the Tar Heels. He is also the highest-paid general manager in college football at $1.5 million annually, which has turned a personnel inquiry into a broader test of how UNC handles pressure around its new football structure.
Mars said Lombardi has been told nothing about the nature of the investigation and wants the process to be swift, thorough and fair. He also asked people not to jump to conclusions based on online speculation, saying the matter should be allowed to run its course before any judgment is made. That statement was issued Friday to WRAL, after UNC announced that the Office of University Counsel was reviewing a personnel matter involving Lombardi.
UNC has given no public detail about what triggered the inquiry, and that silence is what gives the case its edge. Some media reports have tied the leave to a human resources complaint, but the university has not confirmed that. Chancellor Lee Roberts said the school learned of some concerns last week, while athletics director Steve Newmark said the university hoped for an expedited process and added, “I hope so,” when asked whether the matter could be resolved before the first game of the season.
Belichick and Lombardi have worked together for years, including in the NFL with Cleveland and New England, and Lombardi was the person who first reached out to John Preyer to pass along Belichick's interest in coaching the Tar Heels. For UNC, the next step is not a public explanation but a determination inside the university's counsel office. Until that happens, Lombardi stays on leave, the questions stay open, and the football operation keeps moving with one of its most important voices sidelined.
