Belgrade will host a UFC event for the first time on Saturday, and Daniel Rodriguez is at the center of it. UFC Fight Night: Medić vs Rodriguez lands at Belgrade Arena in Serbia with Rodriguez meeting Uroš Medić in the main event of a 14-fight card.
For Rodriguez, the timing is the point. The 39-year-old is back competing overseas for the first time since beating Kevin Holland last July at UFC 318 in New Orleans, and he arrives on a three-fight winning streak. That is why his name is drawing attention now: he is stepping into the Octagon again after months away, and he is doing it in the first UFC card Serbia has ever hosted.
The matchup gives the night its edge. Rodriguez is 7-3 over his last 10 fights, but Medić has been finishing opponents at a 100-percent clip and has gone 5-2 since moving up to welterweight. He is 13-3 overall and has already beaten Gilbert Urbina and Muslim Salikhov before stopping Geoff Neal in February. That form, combined with the fact that he is the only ranked Serbian fighter on the roster, has made him the local standard-bearer for a card that is new ground for the UFC.
There is, though, a useful mismatch in the storyline. Rodriguez is the more experienced traveler on paper, but Medić has been the harder man to drag into deep water. One has the winning streak; the other has the habit of ending fights before they settle. That makes Saturday less about the noise of the first UFC night in Serbia and more about whether Rodriguez can extend his run against a fighter who has not been offering opponents many exits.
Belgrade’s first UFC show also gives the city a rare place on the sport’s map, but the main event will decide how it is remembered. If Rodriguez can push through Medić, he leaves Serbia with a statement win in the UFC’s first trip to the country. If he cannot, the first card in Belgrade will be the one that announced Medić more loudly than anyone else in the arena.
