Giants Vs Padres: San Diego Opens as -138 Favorite With Rodriguez

The San Diego Padres opened Friday night as -138 moneyline favorites over the San Francisco Giants, and they were set to do it with Bradgley Rodriguez as an opener. Rodriguez was expected to cover only one or two innings, which made the game at Petco Park look less like a classic starting-pitcher duel and more like a bullpen test from the first pitch.

That setup is why Giants Vs Padres was drawing attention before first pitch on Friday, July 31. Carson Whisenhunt was listed for the Giants, and he came in with three big league starts this season, a 6.38 FIP over his previous two appearances, 5.06 walks per nine innings and 2.53 HR/9 in that stretch. On the San Diego side, the market was leaning on the idea that the Padres could get early outs from Rodriguez and then hand the game to a relief group that had posted a 2.11 xERA and 0.29 HR/9 over the last week.

That is the edge behind the price, and it also explains why the total was expected to stay Under 8.5. San Diego had not been driving the ball much, with a.091 ISO over its last six games, even though it had still produced a 112 wRC+ in that span. San Francisco’s offense also had little recent power, carrying a.151 ISO over its last seven games, which kept the game script pointed toward short bursts of scoring rather than a slugfest.

The numbers also showed why the bullpen angle mattered more than a traditional starter-versus-starter read. San Diego’s relievers had been sharper than San Francisco’s on both run prevention and home-run suppression, while the Giants’ relief corps had posted a 3.77 FIP and 0.36 HR/9 over its last 25.1 innings. In other words, the Padres were asking a deep bullpen to carry the night, but the Giants were not bringing a bullpen that had been airtight enough to dismiss that plan.

Petco Park conditions were expected to help keep the game quiet, with clear weather, temperatures falling from the mid-70s into the low 70s, light wind and no rain concern. That mattered because the Padres had hit the Game Total Under in 22 of their last 35 home games, a run that fit the same low-scoring shape oddsmakers were pricing in. The result was a familiar one for bettors: San Diego at home, a short opening assignment for Rodriguez, and a game that looked built to be decided by which bullpen held up longer.
