Cyrus Allen has done exactly what a rookie receiver needs to do in the first two days of camp: make the ball find him. The Kansas City Chiefs opened practice on Wednesday, and Allen answered with three catches from Patrick Mahomes, including a touchdown during 7-on-7s.
That kind of start gets noticed fast because it comes before the depth chart settles and before most players have had time to separate themselves. Allen was on the field with Mahomes on Wednesday, then followed it on Thursday with an impressive catch over the middle from Justin Fields, reaching back for a ball that was behind him and still hauling it in while working with the second-team offense.
Andy Reid did not sound ready to hand out roles this early, even while praising the rookie’s start. He said Allen had a good day, that Mahomes seemed to trust him, and that the receiver had already shown he could retain what he was taught after getting three days with a leader before he got out there. Reid also added the part that matters most in camp: “We’ve got a long way to go, but we just gotta keep growing...”
That balance is what makes Allen’s first two days worth watching. The production is real, and it is coming against live camp competition, but the Chiefs are still only at the beginning of the process. Rookies and quarterbacks reported on July 24th, and Allen’s early work builds on what he put in during the spring, with his route-running and ability at the catch point already drawing attention from Tyquan Thornton, who called him eager to learn and excited to see what he can do.
The open question now is not whether Allen can flash. He already has. It is whether those early snaps with different quarterbacks and different units turn into something more durable as the Kansas City Chiefs move deeper into camp. For a rookie, the first job is to be impossible to ignore. Allen has done that, and the next practices will show whether the Chiefs keep giving him the chance to stay in that conversation.
