The Atlanta Dream have spent the first half of the season looking for the right mix, and one possible answer has been floated: check in on Betnijah Laney-Hamilton. That idea has gained attention because the Dream need help beyond their starters, and Laney-Hamilton is a proven wing who is not playing a major role with the New York Liberty.
The timing matters because the Dream had dropped five straight games before the first part of July, then started course correcting as the All-Star Break arrived. They have three All-Stars in Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, but the bench has been mostly young players without much experience. That has left the starters carrying most of the minutes, a load that can wear on a team over the course of a long season.
That is why Laney-Hamilton keeps coming up. She won Most Improved Player in 2020 with the Atlanta Dream, so this is not some abstract fit built on a box score and a logo swap. She knows the organization, and she has already shown she can be a reliable piece for it. This season, though, she is with the New York Liberty and has not seen many minutes on the floor after returning from a knee injury. Even so, she is still averaging 4.9 points per game, which tells you she is available and productive enough to matter if a team wants more depth on the wing.
The friction is obvious. Laney-Hamilton was once a key piece for the Liberty, but her current role does not look like the kind that locks out outside interest. At the same time, there is no indication that the Dream and Liberty have actually talked about a move, and there is no public sign that the Liberty are ready to move her. So the idea remains just that: a suggestion built on fit, history and a clear bench need rather than on any confirmed deal talk.
What happens next depends on whether the Dream decide that their second unit needs a veteran more than it needs more patience. If they do make a call, Laney-Hamilton is one of the few names that ties together need, familiarity and upside without asking the starters to do even more than they already have.
