The Orioles kept themselves in the chase and kept the deadline clock ticking. After an absurd rollercoaster win over the Tigers, they are still 2.5 games out of a wild card spot with only four days and three Orioles games left before the trade deadline arrives.
That is why Max Clark is in the mix now, even if the bigger question is what Mike Elias does next. With the deadline closing in, every game can tilt the front office one way or the other, and the Orioles know they are close enough to matter. They are more than two-thirds of the way through the 2026 season, which makes the next few days less about theory than about decisions.
Craig Albernaz sounded like a manager trying to hold the room together after the win. He told reporters, “I like our guys,” a line that fit the night and also stood in some contrast to what he said earlier in the 2026 season, when he warned that anybody who wants to jump ship should not ask to come back on. The Orioles needed the victory, but they also needed the kind of response that suggests the group still believes it has enough left to make the stretch matter.
Belief is one thing. The numbers are another. The Orioles are being criticized as underachievers playing worse than the sum of their talents, and their defense is on pace to allow the most unearned runs in Orioles franchise history. That is the friction inside the standings: a club close enough to a wild card spot to stay relevant, but flawed enough that every mistake carries extra weight. Gunnar Henderson has stayed near the top of the lineup even while he struggles, Rico Garcia has kept getting high-leverage chances and keeps messing them up, and Jackson Holliday has lately started to look like he might be building toward the player who once deserved to be the #1 prospect in the game.
All of that leaves Elias with a narrow window and a clear choice. The Orioles can still talk themselves into a run, but four days is not much time to answer a deadline question that could shape the rest of the year. Albernaz has already said he likes his guys. Soon, the front office has to decide whether that is enough.
