Samuel Bamba is close to a move to Maritimo Funachal, with direct talks already underway between the Portuguese club and VfL Bochum. For a 22-year-old who has struggled to break through, the transfer would bring a quick reset and could also give Bochum room to act while his name is drawing interest now.
That interest is easy to understand. Bamba made only seven short appearances for VfL Bochum in the 2024/25 season, after leaving Borussia Dortmund in 2024 following 11 years there. He arrived with the sort of background that usually promises a clear path forward: through the Borussia Dortmund youth system from U9 to the first team, 109 appearances for the youth sides since U17 level, and two short first-team outings. Instead, he has been searching for a place where he can play regularly.
His loan spell with Willem II Tilburg offered a better picture of what he can do. In the previous season, he made 36 competitive appearances, scored two goals and set up two more, helping the club win promotion via the relegation playoff at the end of the campaign. That form also helps explain why Bochum’s position in the talks has improved: if a player under contract until summer 2027 is not established at home but has shown value elsewhere, the selling club can still negotiate from a stronger position.
The friction is plain. Bamba remains tied to VfL Bochum for two more years, yet he is still being pushed toward a transfer because the step up after Dortmund never really settled into place and his time in Bochum did not change that. Maritimo Funachal would be betting on a player who already has experience, still has room to develop and needs a fresh start more than another waiting period.
What happens next now comes down to whether the direct negotiations move past principle and into agreement. If they do, Bamba should end up in Portugal and leave behind a spell that never fully took hold at Borussia Dortmund or VfL Bochum. If they stall, Bochum still holds the contract and the leverage, but the direction of travel is already clear.
